Col, you may as well pack in for now as you don't have a network for the DVD player to connect with. It's nothing to do with settings — what you're trying to do at present is look up the 'phone number of somebody who hasn't got a telephone.
As Colin says, Virgin may give you a new modem with a built-in Wi-Fi router.
