Plastic windows, doors etc for us too Gary earlier this year, like you we have had some horrendous rain, not a drop through the new windows and doors etc, even if the outer seals get the odd leak in years to come, then no problem as the casements and frames are self draining, yes that old cement can be a sod to remove, good luck with the house refurb, plastic windows is the way to go for sure if you get some decent ones.
