The VFD control sounds odd Colin - you'd have thought that it should/would be designed so as to give linear control over 270 degrees of rotation from off to full on. I guess that a ten turn pot (if one with the right value and wattage was available), would give more breadth of control. (I wonder whether the pot in linear, log, or inverse log?).
