I did indeed go shopping and came home with a tin of paint and a tin of genuine thinner/brush cleaner and the cabinet proved to be quite easy to get looking good again.. The glass was held in with something that was no stronger than the paint itself so after painting I offered up the class while the paint was still touch dry and with a cocktail stick put on little spots where the original glue had once been and offered up the aluminum panel and screwed it into place so that the glass would stay in place until it was fully dry. This allowed me to fit the front panel back onto the chassis as the aluminum is formed to hold the glass to some extent.
With the panel fitted the controls could be fitted and a final calibration test could be done. I am truly amazed by how closely the readings are coming out compared with those from my Megger bridge with its hand wound resistors.
The cabinet cleanup included cleaning the face of the magic eye and it is now very bright.
I am glad the aluminum front decal is in good condition as it is printed black over all but the words. That would have been awful to fix it it had been bad.
