If you had've fixed it by then, at least that would have given it a 'soak test'!
But to wax seriously for half a mo', it's a complicated beast, electrically and mechanically: with a substantial investment in time and effort - and perhaps a few £ - I'm sure you'll get there in the end. There is one compensating consideration though: you won't find many surface-mount chips in there!
