Hi,
I found veneering to be very difficult when I first tried it too Rob but hopefully with my notes and by watching the excellent video you will succeed. I watched the video many times until I knew it off by heart and following the instructions to the letter I find veneering to be much easier now and I can even lay built up patterns as in the cross banding.
Once you grasp laying basic veneer as in the video Rob you should suddenly start to feel at home with the process then perhaps you will become much more ambitious as I did and start to make up your own stringing/banding. I'll cover this next as I find making and laying my own stringing to be fascinating and the technique opens up a whole new world of cabinet decoration. I'm no expert on the subject but found with a bit of practice veneering does become much easier and more relaxed.
Using hot hide glue is also highly frustrating at first but again a little practice goes a long way; once everything clicks into place it is magic.
