Hi David, when I was in the timber game I aquired a pile of bur oak, I put it in a dry shed, it was there for years, some time later I "re discovered" it, I thought to myself hmm now what can I make with this, I saw how much it had distort and decided what to do with it...I put it on the fire..
I did make a chess board once, I hand sawn the veneers for all the squares from sycamore and oak, long time ago though.
