Hi Col, not sure if Cascamite would show through after sanding etc, I know that PVA would, that would need checking out.
Making a caul out of a bit of pipe: Plastic plumbing pipe including underground pipe and rainwater pipe comes in all sorts of radiuses. Then again if your stretched fabric idea is working then stick with that.
I helped a friend who is an good joiner to veneer some hand made oak reception desks and cabinets for an Advocates office, he used a vacum press.
I take your point regarding animal glue but so far as I know it doesn't like damp, I made a coffe table table at school with rub joints on the top boards using animal glue, it was in my Mums house for years until she passed away, I brought it down here and within a year the rub joints failed, it sits awaiting attention!
