Just a note if anyone is intending to breadboard an SMPS - it can be very tricky !
A 555 boost converter may be ok on a breadboard as they are pretty crude and insensitive to stray capacitances - look upon them as the Ford Fiesta of SMPSs...
Systems based on high efficiency devices like the MAX1771 are subtle and quick to anger... they will have real problems on Veroboard etc and may not work at all... - the Ferrari Enzo of SMPSs...
Get a MAX1771 system right - choosing the right layout and the right components - and it can't be beaten...
If in doubt, buy one from eBay - they don't cost a lot...
