What you can do is connect the aerial of the transmitter directly to the aerial socket on the set.
As for a preamp an LM386 will do nicely. You can even power it off the radio's heater supply, assuming it's AC.

It may be worth checking your Gram socket for bad connections or duff decoupling capacitors too.
