Well with interest I have been reading this thread. The R1155 for me is a receiver that I always wanted when in my early teens but could not afford, so I had to save and wait for a "B" grade No 19 set. No powersupply or headphones I got that together to listen to the local G3's. This is the mid 60's when we had SSB as the new mode but many were still running morse and AM and of course there was always trawler band , that was worth a listen.The Japanese boxes were not in full use so to be an SWL you chose the surplus route. The performance of this stuff was good enough and that is all that mattered, those that wanted different modified them.
Ebay is the best market place to sell an item, you are most likely to reach its market value in other words what somebody is prepared to pay for it as it reaches such a world wide audience of browsers through to collectors constantly searching.
If somebody pays £ 2000 for an R1155 it does not mean R1155's are worth £2000 , it means that on that auction the "captured" interest got £2000 or appears to for whatever reason.
The chances of most of the surplus second world war gear ever having seen intended use or been used in action is highly unlikely. Massive over production left stocks that had to be got rid off so capitalism could get back on its feet. More stuff was trashed or buried down mine shafts than ever released onto the ex govt surplus market.
Why do people pay what maybe regarded as stupid money, because in their minds they want it . Money is just a means of getting it, they want to own one....... but remember that price does not make the market price for an R1155, £1000.
Owning and using a boatanchor now a days is fun. Restoring them and keeping them going to use them is why I do it. I am not under any delusion that they are an investment , I do it for fun.It is in the same vein as restoring and collecting cars.
