It's definitely a polystyrene cap - they're high stability and often used in tuned circuits such as the front end of radio sets as an alternative to silver mica.
Nice set Paul. Though a bit neglected, it looks unmolested, and the two large speakers, along with the bass and treble tone controls, should gave good quality sound. LMS & VHF too!
Is it the one that was on sale at the Swapmeet? If so, as I recall, it was keenly priced and I was surprised it wasn't snapped up more quickly.
