I've now got more experience than when I posted that question and it certainly seems that AC/DC sets for the fifties tend to lack aerial sockets, the DAC90a being the obvious example.
I suppose that connecting through an isolating cap would be fairly safe as it could be a very low value which would stop DC or 50 cps in its tracks.
As you say, Mark, somebody with more knowledge will no doubt inform us.
