I had the pleasure of visiting Colin & Bron a couple of weeks ago and saw the cabinet and the chassis, which was then in the final stages of restoration, now complete, and installed in the cabinet. I can say that the cabinet looks even more stunning at close quarters. The accuracy of the fit of the veneers and the stringing which Colin made and fitted really does set off the sapele pomelle central panels beautifully. One slip when cutting the groove for the stringing (by hand I might add, with a home-made scratch tool) would have ruined all of the good work.
I know that Colin is going to the Golborne Swapmeet next month, and I do hope he'll be able to take the completed TV so that it can be admired and seen working.
Although Colin refers to the TEV as a 'restorer's dream' I think that most of us would view it as such a daunting prospect that it would be our worst nightmare. It certainly makes the restoration of woody radio cabinets seem a much less daunting project for those of us who tend to shy away from the task. I invariably tend to focus on restoring the chassis first, then worrying about the woody cabinet afterwards, almost as a necessary evil, whereas I think Colin - as with the 'restorer's dream' TV - would restore the cabinet first and chassis afterwards!
The pictures of the work in progress give little hint as to the stunning end result that would ensue!
