Ahhhhh. I used to love the green glow in a dark bedroom when I was a lad, and yes, on an 1155.
As you say they were used in Test gear - Bridges typically - but also as level indicators in Tape Recorders.
I think another problem was the limited life of the Phosphor, which meant that the consumption of them was relatively high.
