Here is the video of Ben Upton talking about the Pi5 RP1 capability. At about 30:30 they talk about video out and Ben gives mention to Baird and Farnsworth.

I think the answer to the accidental/intentional question is more one of they will do it because they can! It’s their own hardware and they write the drivers, and the guys that do all of this are accessible on a forum and want to make it happen. And perhaps something to do with the Raspberry Pi foundations charitable status and the sort of people who work in such an organisation.
Frank, does the gui switch modes ok and get as far as asking if you want to make the change permanent? I remember that at one point I had to start afresh with a new image as the gui options disappeared after an update.
