Personally, I'd just use an actual HDD for backups.

I find the dedicated USB models are much slower than buying a USB box with a SATA interface. I have one box that takes mini-IDE and also a mini to standard IDE to read HDD from a dead laptop in a workstation. That also works with SATA to PATA-IDE adaptor!
