Thank you, Adam. That's a really good account of the invention of Quad written by one of the main men. I had the pleasure of meeting Charles Anderson briefly at the Montreux TV convention in Switzerland. I think it was in 1991. It's also a reminder that Ray Dolby first made his name at Ampex.
The chronology is interesting. Fred Pfost writes of recruiting an ex-Vera engineer before 1956. If correct, this implies that Vera was under development before then, even though it was only demonstrated in 1958. A search through the BBC Research Reports (all available online https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/search?Type=Publications ) should show something.
