Recording video in the 1950s

I did always wonder about VERA. Then just this year I read about the Pixelvision. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PXL2000

I presume the BBC wanted to come up with a design of their own rather than use Ampex as their was a lot of "not invented here" mentality around at the time.

I can remember the PXL2000 being demonstrated on Tomorrow's World in the late 1980s, but seemed to be only good for a toy or a niche tool for amateur film makers.
