I left the trade in 1976 but I recognise a few of the TV’s. The price of the Philips 550 @£249 sounds like a good price compared to just a couple of years earlier. It looks like it was an independent retailer to be selling so many brands.

I did wonder if a shop stocking so many brands would also be agents for them all, providing after-sales servicing.

I don’t think he was a member here, but before his passing Alan Stepney (UKVRR) was collating historical information on the various UK TV retailers and independents. It was a slow burner job but I believe his website went with his passing so unfortunately some useful information lost.

I did see some pictures posted elsewhere a week or two ago from a dealer in the 1950s who seemed to stock all the main brands & was an agent for most all of them according to a poster included.

Nice picture! It reminds me of the large out-of-town discount warehouse type stores which were then just starting to become popular, like Comet.
I can spot a few Philips G8 sets in there, with their distinctive slanting tuner buttons. The lost website of Alan Stepney may have been archived at https://web.archive.org Try entering the URL in the "Wayback Machine" box.
Thanks hamid, from searching, it turns out Alan had lots of other interests and someone else was looking for his website a couple of years ago and linked to wayback.
Alan Stepney archive I started searching through his archived site, the retailer info must be in there somewhere, but then I got distracted by all the other stuff. I’m not a steam buff but I bet I easily could have been if it were not for electronics. Eddie |
