Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries

Been buying these to get longer shelf life and just loosing time changing.

Great spec and for that they used to cost about £1 for AA and AAA, now perhaps 'cos of supply, double that.  Just found leakage in a head torch that uses 3 AAA.  Bit disappointing.  All have plenty of charge left and I cant determine which one is the culprit.

Guess its back to Panasonic Alkaline.

Energizer, previously Eveready USA, is owned by a Pet food maker. It's a long time since NCC/UC/Eveready days.
I've found that Varta, lidl, aldi and some other no-maker batteries leak less than Duracell.
Panasonic Alkaline are about the same price as Duracell and Energizer here, that is about x2 overpriced compared to mainland Europe or Aldi/Lidl.
Tests also show that Energizer and Duracell last no longer than other Alkaline batteries and sometimes less.

Why do Alkaline leak, when unlike the Zinc, the case is + and not - and not consumed?
The negative is a spike on the bottom plate. If the battery clip presses too tight or the bottom seal is less good quality, the seal will leak. Then the electrolyte will react with the battery - clip.
There is also a separate issue on really old gear with sharp edges. The film on the case is often very thin and unlike the Zinc and Zinc Chloride cells, is + not - and a short can occur. I've had to add top washers and card sleeves on D cells in old Philips valve portables.

The Zinc and Zinc Chloride should be banned except for the layer type. (PP3, PP9).
Some Lithium based replacement cells / batteries should not be sold. They are a waste of resource and may too low internal resistance. This is why some toys and other things warn to NOT use rechargeable cells, the risk is a fire if there is a short as there is thin wire and no fuse. Only Alkaline should be used.
Lithium based primary cells are best for the nominal 3V buttons and coins. Not anything else.

Basically don't leave ANY kind of battery in unused electronic equipment. All can leak. There may be also tiny standby currents.
