It's a new one on me also. New York City at the time had a pretty good water supply, but I expect the resistance would vary a lot with the water purity.

I wonder if it would make a smooth screen grid regen control for a regen receiver, no noise caused by DC on the pot wiper?

I must admit that I've never come across a Variable Grid Leak, I'll have to consult my ancient books.
