I went for the Tesla model Y long range model.

It was not my first choice but the other options all had extremely long waiting lists (all were similar price for similar specs).

My first and second choices were the Ionic 5 followed by the Polestar 2 at the time I ordered waiting lists of 10months and 8 months respectively.

I could have picked the Tesla up after 4 weeks from order date which was 4 weeks ahead of schedule.

The Y is a competent car but full of children's toys yet lacking some of the basics.

Voice control is pants compared to what I have been used to in the Hondas and the Mitzi

However it is quiet and quick and it integration with the Supercharger network is pretty good for long journeys

The integration with my smartphone is pretty impressive.

I had a brief ride in a Model 3 a while back. When my friend gave me notice that he was about to demonstrate the acceleration, I didn't really take it very seriously. But I immediately realised why - I've never experienced acceleration like that in a road car. It's a dual motor, so something like 4.4 seconds to 60, and well over 400BHP. But of course, it's not just the power - there's none of that waiting for a turbo to spin up, or an auto box to pick a gear - it's just instantaneous and relentless, and makes traditional ICE sports cars look rather silly with all that complexity and noise. I'd be tempted to pick up an older example (not the dual motor version - no point on public roads) if it wasn't a saloon.

I'd struggle with the minimalism in an M3. But the owner was impressed with how much the car has improved over the 3 years he's had it, thanks to the over-the-air updates that address all aspects of the car, not just how the screen behaves. I quite like how Tesla are continuously improving the way they build them. You're probably aware, but if not, check out Munro Live, who have lots of in-depth information about the various Tesla models, including some incredible tear-downs. Not just Tesla though - they're currently working on an Ionic 5, which I've been watching with interest (a colleague has just taken delivery of theirs, after the long wait you mention - I haven't been in it yet, but I've seen a lot of very positive reviews).

Yes mine is also the twin motor I could not justify the extra cost of the performance model with its 0-60mph of 3.5 seconds (mine is 1.3 seconds slower) as I was more interested in the range and the performance model has a lower range despite the extra cost.

I have had one or two try to get me to launch but I really cant be arsed. I did make an exception for a particularly noisy souped up Golf.

I had test drives in the IONIC 5 the Polstar 2 and the SKODA ENYAC as we have many electric cars kicking around at work ( we sell EV chargers up to 380KWH) I had a spin around the block in most of what's available over the last 2 years or so.

I'll see how I get on but so far its pretty good, its also one of the easiest cars to drive. There is pretty much mothing to do but steer and press the go pedal you almost never need to press the brake pedal.

You all seem to avoid a few things.
1. How far does it go after a full 100% charge?.
2. How much does it weigh ?.
3. Are there ECO battery options to limit the ( useless ) 400 HP to something like 50 HP ?. After all, revving your soundless electric motors at the traffic lights does not achieve much.
4. What times are required to fully charge, even a small electric car ?.

Why havent I looked myself?, yes I have. BUT after the awful yanquee accent finishes telling me it can do 0-60MPH is 3 seconds, thats the end of that video. I have explained before that in Au we need range in miles OR kilometers, not eye damage from the acceleration. Phone ??? If your caught on the phone in most states ( every state is different ) its about $3000 fine ) so jam the "connectivity ".
Does it come with a built in charger, so that even if I can get road side assist to the next servo, ( most are limited to 50 kliks ) I will need to plug into a small generator ( like 10 kilowatts probably ), as well as the other 20 caravans at the camp spot, all of whom are listening to bloody awful music at 35,000 PMPO watts. ( dont ask me what that means, my university taught RMS or peak values ).
I am highly interested in electric vehicles, well alternative energy vehicles, as I am a bit of greenie, but definately not one of the ones who burn flags and slogans to make their moot point. ( see the smoke ?? ).
Please DONT mention the styling of the Rivian !!!!. I have driven prettier mine haul trucks than that.

Yes, its just me venting again.

your answers in order:

1 I already said the practical range in post #49 its about 300 miles unless I go crazy
2 Its just shy of 2 tons actually its almost the same weight as my Mitzi
3 yes it has eco driving modes which alter the responsiveness of the accelerator pedal and just like an Internal combustion engine you don't have to use all the available power. (you cant rev an electric car at the lights as soon as you touch the accelerator you are moving)
4 It depends on the car but most modern EV's charge at a rate between 100KWH and 200KWH on DC chargers. Home chargers tend to be 7.4KW ish so unless the car is completely flat it will charge easily overnight. On the supercharger it will charge in about 20- 30 minutes depending upon charge state and temperature. Before these rapid charges it "conditions" the battery to get it at the correct temperature.

Yes it has built in AC charging from a convectional mains plug (10A @230V) but that will only add about 9 miles of range per hour It will also charge from single phase or 3 phase type 2 outlets 7.4 to 22KWH

You seem to have misunderstood what I meant by phone connectivity, Virtually all modern cars connect to built in handsfree communication (which you can turn off!). What I mean here is that my mobile phone allows me entry to the car and to start it. It also allows me to control the charging and status remotely (much like my Mitzi does) It also allows me to heat or cool the car remotely or program it to do so at any given time  I can even track my car using this facility. I have no idea about the sound system its adequate to listen to BBC R4 

The current state of Electric Vehicles is not for everyone and they expensive.
There seems to be a misunderstanding that those who buy Electric Vehicles are unaware of the downsides. Most of us do our research to see if they work for us and make the decision accordingly.
There are always those poor souls who buy clueless but it was ever thus

Oh dear, here we go again...

Joe, it's pretty simple. I don't live in Australia.

The one I mentioned - the original Ioniq - is one of the most efficient EVs in its size class, and has a relatively small battery pack as a result (28 or 38kWh, depending on vintage).

1. Range of the original Ioniq is just shy of 200 miles which, as I mentioned, would be absolutely fine for my use-case.
2. The original Ioniq is lighter than the ICE estate car that I had before we decided to go down to 1 car.
3. Yes, many cars sold within the last decade or more have drive mode selection (eco, normal, sport, etc).
4. That depends entirely on the charger, fairly obviously. In the case of the original Ioniq with the relatively small battery pack, you can charge overnight on a standard UK 13A outlet.

The original Ioniq does 0-60 in around 10 seconds, which is more that fast enough for public roads - I don't want or need a fast car (I'd argue that no-one needs a fast car for public roads, but that's another conversation). So no, I'm not considering a Tesla or similar. But that doesn't stop them from being impressive bits of engineering.

There are recovery trucks with small generators that can supply enough charge to get you to the next charger.

Regarding phone integration, this is not unique to EVs - most cars sold in the last decade have it. It means you don't have to touch your phone when driving. You can reject or accept calls with a button on the steering wheel and/or screen. Or just choose not to let it ring. The phone itself will probably do that anyway (iPhones default to that when driving, but obviously you can change that if needed - I'd guess Android has similar functionality).

If your university really taught you about "watts RMS", then that's, err, interesting...

Ultimately, Mike and I were having a factual conversation about a handful of specific models. I'm not sure why you felt the need to vent (your word) about EVs in general, but honestly, it's not a good look. It's not our fault that an EV for your specific use-case might not exist yet. Of course, EVs aren't for everyone. But then, I'd never want a Rolex, but I'm not going to vent about them on a public forum.

And incidentally 2 of my friends have the original IONIC's and it a great car for the daily commute, the school run and shopping.

So 95% of what many of us use a car for .

Very cheap to run if you can get the one of the low (sub 10p KWH) overnight rates.

That's exactly what I thought at first, but the more you think about it, the more feasible it is for the longer journeys too. I'd never drive more than 200 miles in one go without a break - that would be dangerous - and even my furthest-flung relatives are nowhere near that distance (perhaps 150 miles tops). With overnight/destination charging, and a small exchange of cash to compensate, I reckon I'd be able to cover just about every use case. Especially as the small battery means that even 13A "granny charging" is fine. If we did buy one, I can see our ICE car getting almost no use.

I haven't looked properly at electric cars since I bought my Citigo E just over two years ago. Since then it's been an excellent town car with enough range to do quite a lot more. But I still need my ICE car (a 10 year old Skoda Yeti) for longer journeys and load lugging.

What's obvious is that lots of new electric cars have appeared in those two years, some of them looking outstanding. It seems quite a while since Kia set the standard for an affordable car with good range with the e-Niro.

Within the next 2 or 3 years I can see myself buying a multipurpose EV and getting rid of both the Citigo and the Yeti. But I'll miss the Citigo around town, it's small and so handy. But I can't justify keeping it if my main car is an EV.
