I've saved myself some work. There is no necessity to exchange the EHT transformer in the HMV 900 for the new transformer. The set has already been equipped with a replacement transformer. See first attachment.
The EHT transformer in the Marconi 702 is a special one made by the Majestic Transformer Company in Poole Dorset. A similar transformer is installed in the HMV 901. So it follows the recently rewound EMI transformer will be fitted in the HMV 902. A new adaptor plate will be made for this application. A box to contain the EHT components should be made for the HMV 902 using the dimensions of the box in the 900 which are: 8 1/4" long, 4 3/8" deep and 8 1/2 high. Geordie McBoyne.

Hi Bob, the power unit was made by Gerry Welles in 1988. The original unit was missing from the set so Gerry set about making a replacement. The components used were from his existing stock including the oil fill EHT transformer. Same goes for the wiring under the chassis. Murphy310 wrote: "Hi, Is that a Hi Viz transformer I see in that can David?" Hi Trevor, the camera over emphasised the red varnish on the EHT transformer. I can't remember the firm that rewound the transformer. The laminations are the original EMI parts. Geordie McBoyne.

Today, the adaptor plate was drilled and the new transformer test fitted on the chassis.
Counter sink screws to be used to attach the transformer on the plate. Geordie McBoyne.

Sacrilege Bob, terrible idea..
![]() Nearly as bad as fitting Rover K series engines into Skoda Estelle's. Very quick though until it blows a head gasket.

Hi Trevor the Ford Zetec engine is a very good engine for conversions as it makes classic cars more useable Always wanted to fit a Rover V8 into a Skoda Estelle and keep the car looking standard and Racing a VW Golf GTI from the traffic lights . Seen a MG today fitted with a Toyota twin cam engine with motor bike carbs with points distributor ( no horrible electronics ) & 5 speed gearbox this conversion the owner says was done 23 years ago and the only thing he changed was from Weber to motorbike carbs . David please post some pictures as this is a very good conversation kind regards Bob

Hi Bob, Hi Trevor,
The attachment shows the installation of a twin cam Toyota engine in an MG Midget. No electronics, no laptops needed for setting up. Just pure engineering. The 902 power unit chassis will remain in the set, there's no need to go to the bother of making another. The only serious alteration to Gerry's work is to make a box for the EHT components. Keep prying fingers out. I've found the lid which was fitted to these safety boxes. |
