Drain rods

Gents.

Can anybody advise the proper thread type for drainage rods?  I'm looking at knocking up a large T handle to go on the end of a rod to bore out a blocked up soakaway but having no luck as to what it is and my thread gauges do not cover that size.

Don't know off hand, the thread on the set I have is shown below:

   

What type of soakaway is it, rain water? land drains for a septic tank? If it's the latter then good luck with it, all land drains are doomed to failure, it depends how well filtered the effluent is that dictates doomsday.

About three or four years ago I put in  a full septic tank effluent soakaway at our place, so far so good...

Just a word of warning in general, a few lengths of drain rod screwed together can wind up if the business end gets jammed, if they wind up by a turn or two and the business end can't be pulled out then there is every chance that a rod or rods can come unscrewed if you let go of them thereby making the problem of the blockage worse.

Pity it all doesn't go to a soakaway, the water bill would be reduced.

Don't want to sound all doom and gloom but do you know if the soakaway is silted up? (assuming it's a hole in the ground filled up with hardcore type of soakaway)

If the soakaway is just the perforated or gaped pipe type surrounded by hardcore (ie: drainage field type) the whole of hardcore surrounding it could be clogged up, if the hardcore is fully clogged up throughout its length then it usually means the end, sometimes roots can clog up just a section.

I have an old drain rod that's been lying around at the back of the house since we moved in. If you'd like the couplings from that let me know & I'll cut them off & pop them in the post to you.

That's kind of you, now how do I do a PM on this.

I'm assuming the soakaway is of the hardcore type. Previous owner of the house managed to damage the pipe and garden half the dug dirt into the line. The top section has been repaired by me but the whole line now needs clearing right out. Got all the bits, including a nice claw to go on the end but to do it justice it needs a decent sized crossbar at the top of the rod chain to get some leverage and do it justice. It' it's not too badly silted up I can recover it, if not it's drive up and replace the whole lot which is not an option I relish.

This is the problem living in the sticks, all that raised dirt from the surrounding fields ends up on your house roof.

If it's beyond fixing and you have the room then it's sometimes easier to put a new soakaway in, one man on a mini digger and another helping would normally do that in a day, in the last one we did as a private job we used a soakaway crate and some Geotex to stop any surrounding earth falling into it, crates are handy if you don't have access to clean washed hardcore or can't be bothered with hit and miss block work etc:

In the rainwater soakaway I did at our place a few years ago I used hardcore rather than a crate 'cos I had loads of hardcore on site to get rid of It was quite a big one it takes all the rainwater from the house roof and also from the garage/woodshed roof.

I suspect the soakaway disappears under the twin strip concrete drive. I need to keep it going for a couple of years until I can find the replacement of the concrete with brindle blocks, at which point I will have an excuse to dig the whole lot up.
