This has spawned further investigation.
I have the next one to appear and yes indeed a third will make them do it like London buses ![]() This time we have got a box that has been sealed with IBA parcel tape and the box is marked "return to BALA" and also the sound channel 50.3175 is written on the PCB. Are there any IBA folk whom know where BALA is? I got back in time for the edit. Another slightly more modern one is with me too. http://golbornevintageradio.co.uk/forum/...p?tid=4936

Bala was an ITA relay TX in north Wales. Ch7, ERP 100W. Info from an old TV Engineeers Pocket Book.
According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bala_transmitting_station it's still a TX site.

How amazing Ref!! Mine was packed in the same way. Did you get it from a forum member by any chance?

Hi.
Well mine is just about fully set up on my system. It runs continuously, I'm feeding it from my 12 volt system using a DC to DC converter for isolation between the polarities, I'm feeding it with my version of test card C. The output has been matched into my aerial system, the output is high impedance so an rf transformer was added too, ideally I'd like to add sound but that's for another day. At the moment I'm running on 405 lines channels 1, 2, 9 & 11 plus 13 when required. I'm also thinking of adding ch 5. All of the auroras run 24/7 off my solar/battery system.

It did come from a member here. They appeared to be going as freebies to anyone collecting stuff.
I went for an item that was not advertised as a substitute for an item that did not quite fit the bill for what I wanted. At least we have found a bit more about who used them.

Hi Refugee.
I'd be interested in Buying, Swapping or giving a donation to the Museum if you are at all interested? It would save me the hassle of building a sound modulator. PM me please if any of the above are OK. Thanks.

Hi.
I've purchased Refugees sound modulator and have received it today. I made a simple passive combiner, with sound at 9db lower carrier than vision, not too sure if this is the correct ratio though. Performance is superb, both vision and audio quality are first class. The modulator runs perfectly with normal line level input. So I now have CH11 fed to the system with either test card and music or program material fed via my old multistandard aurora and obviously sound. I'll post a few photos of the work tomorrow.

That sounds like a good result and with a matching pair. It sounds like it is time to build a fancy housing for them. They are certainly better together.
I still have one with European channel spacing but that looks like it could be modified for what I want as it is made with Toko coils and is one of the last thru hole builds. It should not be difficult to reverse engineer to a block diagram at least. I have just started work on a real vintage signal generator for a thread in the test gear section. Well done. |
