I will start this off, I get all mine from this outfit in Canada, Dave Cantelon is super helpful (pm me) and always willing to help. They provide all the original odd values .003uF .002uF etc resistor kits, cap kits etc.

Pricing is excellent and shipping is normally about 4-5 days

The shopping cart takes a bit getting used to but it works once you suss out how to amend.

Remember to add air mail shipping, not a problem though if there is anything wrong Dave will contact and raise an invoice.

Don't expect to be able to order 2 components, this is a business and if that's all you want then shop local.

Are the shipping prices reasonable on buying components from US? Has anyone thought of putting together the occassional bulk buy and splitting the costs so as everyone could share a small amount of the postage (just a thought?)

Hi rob,

Postage is very minimal, as I restore TV's you can imagine the amount of caps you can get through is high, I think the worst set I did consumed about 75 !!! so I used to often put bulk orders in and the postage is very reasonable. I have since had a major bulk purchasing spree so as to stop having to order so often initial outlay but now have a good stock.

I rather like the scope clock - I've got a 3BP1 scope tube which would be ideal, but the kit for the rest of the stuff is 99 Euro and I'm not sure if that incudes the mains transformer, so it ends up being a dear do. I have built a couple of four tube nixie clocks for which I sourced the PCB from the States - one for myself, and the other for my married younger son. They always attract interest from visitors.

I see that he's based in Germany and says that for EU customers VAT is added, but I wonder how that works? If he exports outside Germany, the VAT should surely be added in the UK if it's to be added at all. Most stuff ordered online seems to come in 'under the radar' of HMRC - from justradios in Canada, who I've never used.

I occasionally buy stuff from China - digital meters for projects etc. I'm presently awaiting a frequency counter module (£13 post free) for a lathe rev counter I'm going to build. I've also bought a couple of excellent little 386 audio amps on tiny PCBs for about a fiver each from China.

Interesting site, Kev. I was surprised to see that Rod Burman had retired and sold his stock to them, though. There seems to be less and less valve availability in the UK.

Any problems with UK VAT and charges? Anything over (I think) £18 is liable to VAT etc. It's not so much the VAT as the hefty fee levied by Parcelfarce etc that can be excessive.

I've just discovered this guy following a tip-off from Yorkie:-

The range is poor - though does include switched 470KΩ log pots! - but the prices are low, like 6.5v lamps for 15p, and the postage is too. He also does odd resistors, albeit in nothing over half watt.

Certainly worth a look though.
