To mark its move back to Broadcasting House this year, BBC Radio 4's Today programme is producing a limited edition, digital radio - sold to raise money for Children in Need. Aspiring UK designers - and listeners with a touch of creative flair - are being encouraged to submit designs.

Very good Joe - that had me really laughing!

But to wax seriously for half a mo', the closing comment in that clip - "a radio should have a personality" - struck a chord with me. Absolutely spot on. When you consider the multiplicity of designs that have been produced over the years - electronic, mechanical and the cases - there is so much variety that it is not surprising that some enthusiasts accrue such substantial collections. And in my experience of such collections & collectors, there is always a 'favoured few' sets. Which favourite (or favourites) is yours? And why?

An interesting question, Al, and one I ask myself.

For looks and ease of servicing it would be my brown DAC90a - I think the black DAC90 looks even better but I don't have one and doubt I ever will.

For day-to-day practical use I'd probably go for the VHF61: not too big, straight forward design and has both VHF and a gram socket.

However, if I could only keep one it would be my VHF90. I'm listening to my VHF70 as I type this.

just had a look at the link for the competion, it doesn't seem to give much away, presumabley the winning design will be the one that appeals to the age band that typically gives the most money to that event? As to a favourite, I do not normally get to work on domestic radios (not since my early years in the trade) but in fairness I suppose there should be a favourite from each decade otherwise it wouldn't be fair from a technological developement point of view.
