I recently acquired a Grundig TK18 tape recorder. It came with a manual and microphone looks in relatively good condition. The previous owner said the spool turned which was a good sign. I haven't powered it yet as I wanted to do a visual inspection first. The first thing I did was to give it a good wipe down as it seemed to be covered in a grey film of something. I was able to remove the top and bottom plastic covers easily enough and the grey-black film covers the inside as well. The removed plastic parts were easy enough to clean. The belts look undamaged but the heads are dirty and need a good clean. I can already see at least one electrolytic capacitor that will need replacing, but to get a better picture I need to figure out how to remove the chassis to get at and examine the PCB. It looks like someone has added bleed resistors across the mains filter capacitors contained within the large can.
After tackling any 'replace on sight' parts and cleaning the heads with IPA I will check the transformer and power it up on a variac. In the meantime, I would appreciate some advice about how to access the main PCB?
