My campervan aerial is non-directional and seems to work pretty good on freeview.

 They do work quite well but in a van you are normally near roads and towns. When we get into the more remote areas it does get difficult. We have cuttings and hills around us and some heavily wooded areas.
We use a 32 element folded dipole on poles up to 5 metres tall to get any signal sometimes.

I found an Android app for Google Play that will find the direction of the best transmitter providing your phone includes a compass.

My old Doro unfortunately does not have a compass................. I will have to get up to date!
