One interesting side of this is ship scrapping in India,the basically drive a big ship at a flag on the beach at full tilt then a load of women and men strip the ship down by hand wearing no safety gear but flip flops and scarves tied round their face. They are currently scrapping less than 10 year old cruise ships; crazy, that's shipping for you.

I have seen some film of the Indian scrap dealers.
They bring the ship onto the coast and gradually remove the parts from above the water line and at each high tide they pull it further up the beach until the keel is high and dry.
Then they used to turned the metal into 3 wheeled taxis.

Not only three wheeled taxis that are called Tuk Tuks.
Including VW, Ford and many others. Its recycling but done in a dangerous manner with little regard for safety, environment or a person's well being.

I would guess that they take the ship to a sea port first to remove anything that can be sold off for more than scrap metal.
Things like cabin light generators get dragged off and used to light small towns before that take it to the beach.

A modern ship is like a small town, especially cruise ships, I've seen petite Indian women with mattresses piled high on their heads, I'm 6ft and struggle with one. So apart from steel, there's miles of copper cable & piping, insulation type materials,plastic of all sorts by the ton not to mention hazardous chemicals,.

Still, if the ships weren't re-cycled there the locals wouldn't have jobs, there are 1000's who depend on the work, like everything, it's not black & white.
