It is tricky with a £99 camera.
You have to find out how to pause the focus function and then adjust the camera position to be the same distance from the item the surface you focused on was and then you can be in focus on what you want. It is a fiddly job.

I don't have that trouble with my Lumix, which is in a similar price range to the one you quoted. The auto focus usually chooses whatever is in the centre of the frame - if you want the object off centre, you can move the camera without losing the focus, then press the shutter.

My guess is that Dave was too close to the MOBO. As it is 3" high, that would make an appreciable difference in relative distance to the desk top and might even have have reduced it below the minimum focus distance.

A longer shot with a moderate degree of zoom would have been better because the distance ratio would have been much smaller. Care is needed even here, though: my Lumix focuses from 3cm to infinity with no zoom applied but the minimum distance increases rapidly to 50cm as zoom (x2.5) is applied, reaching 1.5m at maximum zoom (12x)
