The trick is not to over fill the water reservoir, there's normally a "just right level" Naturally the blade guard should be down.

Short term exposure to the dust would not normally be a problem, long term exposure = silicosis.

I've discovered all this from experience

Me too Also too much water sloshing around can bugger up the bearings after prolonged use.

A couple of years ago a friend of mine was doing some Tiling and went out and bought a Tile Cutter - Circular Saw variety. When I saw him a couple of days later he complained that it was hopeless - didn't cut well, chipped the Tiles, slow, etc, etc. So, I lent him mine. When I dropped it off I reminded him that I'd stored it dry and he had to add water. A look of horror crossed his face. Water? What Water? He'd never read the Manual and was using his dry. When he put some Water in the Reservoir is worked beautifully.
