Loctite for binding aluminium

This is for use on potentiometer repair on the Monoknob !

Has anyone experience of using these adhesives?

326 seems the preferred item with 7649 primer. I can buy the 326 for about £15 but the primer is silly money up in the £30's !!

There is also 401 at about £8 and no primer is specified as essential for it on the Data Sheet although it says it maybe used (possibly to speed cure time). It is said to be useful for metals including ali.

It is for a small one off job and the parts do have some snap together and it is non load bearing.

Obviously for a one off I don't want to spend a huge sum.

My understanding was that if the ally was bright and grease free, 'ordinary' Locktite worked.
They sell Locktite for sticking interior mirrors to windscreens and they are ally castings ( No, not the windscreens!)
Have you tried superglue? The universal tool kit in a tube.

The snag with Loctite is that the word covers a whole range of Adhesives. In fact for Old Codgers like me Loctite means Thread Lock.
326 is an Acylic whereas 401 is Cyanoacrylate (Superglue).
Using an Activator at least guarantees that it will 'Go off'. Without is more dodgy.

We used to use Cyanoacrylates to attach Ferrite Magnets to the Speaker Chassis at RRI 40 years ago. They don't fall off if it's done right.

I'd be inclined to try straight Superglue first. If it doesn't go off breathe on it as it often likes a tad of warm moisture.

The Loctite ones are super glue but made for specialist applications like ali. In the same way that the metal is hard to solder to, due to instant oxidisation, even after cleaning, the same happens with most glues.

I had an unopened tube of Bostic super glue ("The Original") and have done a test piece of two scraps of abraded ali. Tomorrow I will see how well they are held together.

I read somewhere that if ally is cleaned and a light oil applied immediately, it can be soldered with 60/40 solder.
Never tried but it seems illogical to solder oily metal.
I found that pound shop superglue is usually poor quality, not surprising, but the packs sometimes include a tube of accelerator.
Alternatively, Epoxy resin?

Well I glued two pieces of aluminium together yesterday with the Bostic super glue quoted above.

They are about 1 1/2" wide and I flatted and cleaned about a 1/4" tab on each. Then they were glued and I'm happy to report I cannot tear them apart with hands alone. So a good result.

Have found UHU glue to be just as good, and doesn't go off when in situ unlike other glues I could mention that go hard and brittle.
