Had two set ups come my way: One is a Bose CineMate Series 2 'Cinema' speaker system and the other is a Sounddock Series 2 for Ipod and Ipad?
Both were bought in the US but are suitable for UK voltage so just change the plug and throw out the US power cleaner multiblock for the CineMate and it works. Huge box for the bass woofer and it can make a lot of this !! The two treble / mid speakers are quite small. Optical connection to the TV.
Had a look in the end of the woofer that holds the electronics ... not a lot, big heatsink and a PCB and another shielded box. Works only by the remote so flat disk battery and you would be back on TV sound.
The Sounddock has a dead wall wart switch mode PSU. Seems common as loads of replacements sold in the US. Surprised to take the back off the main unit and find it holds a large battery pack (probably Ni-Cad) but of course it does say "Portable Music System". Works on a bench supply with a CD player connected to a rear socket as I don't have an Ipod. Would be easy to make a simple linear PSU for it as only 20V and 400 mA although the original PSU has a 2A rating.
