Hi Alan, well that's next on the list of things to try. I was hesitating because of the possible damage strong bleach might do to fabric this old. Since I can't really use it as is I've got nothing to lose so if i get some time tomorrow I'll give that a go.

I finally got the cab stripped back to bare wood. Whatever lacquer was on there took forever to get off. I did not want to risk sandpaper since the veneer on these is so thin - I'll reserve that for when I apply the grain filler. I'll let it dry out for a while before moving on. Time to get cracking on the new speaker backing board!

What I failed to notice is the cloth shrunk - considerably. All attempts to stretch and pin it have failed so I'll have to use a different cloth in order to move the project along. If I get a proper replacement cloth later on I can retro-fit. Each new project brings new knowledge and experience! I wouldn't mind but I did not use hot water at any stage.

The Siemens has been working great for the last few months. Alas this evening when I switched it on there was a very strong buzzing sound from the mains TFO area so having made sure there was no immediate burning smell, I waited to see of the radio worked and it did. I didn't want to risk leaving it on however so I guess it will be back in intensive care next week. Oh well, I guess some restorations are never complete, especially if you use the set on a regular basis!

I had guests staying last week and fortunately it worked fine when I 'showed it off'
