Eddystone Receiver Choice

Thanks for every ones response so far, size would not be an issue, I did consider a S/H Frog but my bench tends to be transistor free, quick spin slide rule scale would be a pre requisite. I have an old 358 but would like a later Eddystone for my collection and for the purposes previously described, Never owned a RA17 or it's later version but it's on the list, a Collins 390R in my dreams, by the way how does the 392 stack againt the 390 any one know? Also re: Eddystone, ac/dc would not be an issue, Eddystone did many models of which I know little about so trying to narrow down what would fit the bill according to members experiences hence original post. I realize that they can be quite expensive but if original and not got at and a good example then I guess you have to pay the money. Have bought a few cheapies in the past, generally turn out to be old dogs unless extremely lucky, that's my own experience.

For Amateur bands only coverage, the Eddystone 888A takes a lot of beating. Everything that I can hear on my RA-17 I can hear on that Eddy.

However, I do understand that you want a general-coverage receiver, Lawrence, and I have read your last Post. With that in mind, and as a supplement to my earlier post, some of the 1970's valve Japanese radios might be worth considering. Yes, agreed, they do indeed have their limitations (especially compared to an Eddy), but these days they are a lot cheaper to buy than an Eddy. (And they always were!) Most of them tend to be single-conversion superhets with one R.F. stage and an I.F. of 455 kHz; a sure recipe for poor image rejection above 14 MHz, but if you can live with that, your need for a general-purpose monitoring receiver could be well met by such a choice. And at an acquisition price that should it prove to be consequently unsuitable, you shouldn't lose too much money - if any - upon resale. I'm thinking of Trio, Lafayette, Kenwood and Realistic (Tandy / Radio Shack) to name a few, but, IMHO, there are some in that grouping that should be avoided, such as the Trio 9R59DE, although the earlier 9R59 / KT-340 doesn't suffer the same poor design features. And I don't care for the Trio JR500 either: IIRC, sadly lacking in user-controls.

Anyway, this rambling must stop: I've more important things to do: like more 'input' to The Gallery.

Hello Al, I am following your gallery input with interest I think the gallery should be named after you, I just read your comment on the SX28 I have just posted up there, I was writing my comment/brief description at that time and is now added, having removed the front panel from the chassis on that receiver on more than one occassion the panel/cabinet alignment in the photo is not quite spot on, I stuffed it in the cabinet in a rush to get the photo done....SX28 not as heavy as AR88 but not light either due to hefty mains transformer. The cabinet feet are worn somewhat so it's a right finger trapper....The receiver is a real shack warmer.
