Of course you only need high ripple current rating for the reservoir cap and not the smoothing David. Think that Philips article was in Radio Bygones if you take that.

I have added to this one not to score points but I have an illustration that maybe useful.

I have now powered the French Integra up. This is just a 5 valve supie from 1935 but it does use a directly heated rectifier and and indirectly heated valves for the other 4.

On switch on, from cold, the reservoir cap gets to 502V for a few seconds and then goes downwards settling at 390V. The smoothing cap, as there is an HT potentiometer, only sees a max of 483V and when the set is warmed up is 321V.

This is from a transformer of 375 - 0 -375 V.

It illustrates the point very well Gary, directly heated rectifiers sure fire up quick.

I have got amplifiers that run at about 420V.
Replacing them would require 450V minimum.
