todays haul

Hi All,
Its been a very busy weekend for me - 12 hours at work yesterday and then a trip out to pick up an interesting tip off from Josh on ebay! I bought this lot from a seller today for £19.
There are a number of radios as you can see including a Bush VHF90 and a Pye Fenman 1. There is also a Pye model 47C which I am not familiar with but the grille doesn't look correct?

There are a couple of chassis including a Bush VHF54; a big pack of vintage caps of varying types (they look like NOS) and a box of 7 or 8 transformers.

It has been a long drive to pick these up from the south coast and car aircon came into its own today.

I also managed to visit a dear colleague from the VRf to discuss the 'Sussex' valve tester which he devised and built. I also picked up a Mk8 Avo for Kevin which will be soon winging its way 'up north' to its new owner.

The dials on the woodies look especially attractive and in good shape.

Re Mike Rowe, and 'The Sussex' I dropped him a PM back in Dec 1999 to congratulate him on the design, and to stand by for a deluge of responses. I don't think he fully realised just what he'd let himself in for! Since then, in the VRF there have been almost 600 posts and 63,000 views. It would be interesting to know how many have been successfully built, and how many have ben started but abandoned, as often happens with complex projects.

Mike is also noted for his PW 'Robin' 1 GHz frequency counter, which proved hugely popular - many hundreds were built by contructors including myself.

Re:Mike Rowe - he has been taken aback by the level of responses for his valve tester and it was great to see the first model working in the 'flesh' so to speak. I didn't realise that he has written a number of articles for practical wireless until he told me yesterday.

I did speak to him about this forum because it would great to have someone of his knowledge and experience as one of our potential advisors.

I for one would be very interested in building his design frequency counter (when i do finish my tester!!!!) so it will be good to have this as a homebrew project.

Unfortunately the prescaler IC for that PW 'Robin' counter is long since obsolete, and time has moved on. Most homebrew counters these days are PIC based rather than using a string of ICs. For example, the one at this link, which goes up to 50MHz:

(It can go higher in frequency if a prescaler is built).

However, quite frankly, unless you have an abiding interest in homebrew, rather than simply wanting a frequency counter, there are many commercial ones available for under £50 new, so it makes little economic sense to build one.

At the time that I built Mike's 1 GHz counter I was an active radio amateur, (As was Mike, G8JVE), so the counter was useful at VHF/UHF, but I've since completely lost interest in amateur radio as IMHO, it's just become posh CB.

Yes, David, Amateur Radio, alas, is simply no longer the 'Amateur Radio' that you & I once found - and subsequently enjoyed - which is a great shame. I believe the rot really started with the spread of single-sideband on H.F. (although, and yes, I do realise its merits over AM). But the point is this: an A.M. rig could be constructed cheaply with little test gear and is conceptually easier to get to grips with, theory-wise. Hence, the word 'Amateur' preponderates. Of course, when Two Metres was opened up to the newly-created G8 + 3 licensees, at first it was a case of 'back to the kitchen table' - but those halcyon days of yesteryear are now long gone - which is a shame.    I'm sure that there must be many now-inactive Radio Amateurs who would readily return to the VHF & UHF bands if there was a significant amount of A.M. activity on them: there isn't any, as far as I know - with the possible exception of Four Metres).

Finally, can anyone here confirm that suspicion of mine?

Glad you have got your haul ok! For me this is how hobby's should be done, with people helping each other out.

Next time you're up here you'll have to bring the VHF90, looks like it could be fun to play with!
