In a cheap and cheerful design it's slightly easier to do backwards bars. The counter doing rgb is counting up rather than down which is needed for proper bars.

I thought I'd posted this yesterday but I must have hit Preview rather than Post ...

So, once again with feeling:

Two Manor Supplies adverts from 1976. One, from the July issue of PT shows only a crosshatch pattern generator kit whilst the December issue shows an add-on colour bar generator kit and a combined crosshatch  and colour bar generator kit.

Note, however, that these two kits are Mk. 3 and Mk. 4 respectively, so any published article can be be presumed to have been much, much earlier.

   

It is a pity that there are no index for any of the magazines on that otherwise excellent archive site - even Wireless World, which published a detailed index every year.

... there should be a black bar to the left of the blue bar. In the normal sequence, the white bar would be on the left and the black on the right ...

Although the black bar always appears in any description of colour bars, I'm sure that I've seen broadcast colour bars which end with the blue bar or just a small part of the black bar.

In this particular non-broadcast case, it would be easier to dived the line by 8, giving seven 8µS bars. The blanking period, though, is 12µS which would account for the first bar, blue in this case, being ~4µS narrower that the others. However, that doesn't explain what that clutter is to the right of the 'white' bar so, perhaps, I'm wrong ...
