Raymond Haigh (whose initials are aptly 'R.F'!) wrote many excellent well writen articles on radio and related projects in Practical Electronics and Radio Bygones over several years, including the RB 'Wobbulator' and RF Probe. All very appealing - not just from a technical aspect, but aesthetically too. Just glancing at the pics, almost induces me to reach for the soldering iron!
I've seen nothing of him is recent years, but note that at the link below there are 66 pages of his designs from 2003/04 PE magazine. The designs are modular, so you can adopt the 'build a bit - test a bit' approach, and can use individual modules such as audio amp modules or a BFO/product detector - for example as an a little bench test-amp, or add-on to a set with no BFO. Well worth a look - you can download it and save it to your hard drive if desired:
