In my attempt to keep abreast of modern things, I have played with AI.
Some things are quite impressive.
I asked it to create a circuit for a wireless using specific valves and it did quite well though it is taking forever to draw the circuit diagram.
It has though worked out the valve purpose, the order in the set and the important connections between them.

Wow! Very sweeping generalisation most of which I profoundly disagree with! First, yes, AI datacentres use a lot of electricity but that situation will improve as algorithms and general technology improves. Some systems can be prone to "hallucination", however it's generally pretty obvious when that happens.

However, to state "It's a scam" is, by any measure, false. There are undoubtedly non-AI systems being passed off as AI for marketing reasons, e.g. systems that are solely based on machine learning, but true generative AI is a very real and valuable beast.

All "intelligent" systems need training - that includes humans and all supposedly intelligent life forms - none of the known systems spontaneously become knowledgeable or sentient. Content isn't simply scraped and regurgitated - just as in humans it's used to formulate the answers to queries. I've asked generative AI systems very complex and finely focussed questions regarding code generation for obscure functionality on unusual microprocessors and have frankly been amazed at not just the quality of the response, but also at the text rationale that is produced along side the code. The decision making seems very clear and makes for instructive reading - really subtle stuff.

Also, AI is used in many many fields, very few of which involve human interaction. I've been privileged to be involved in the funding of some medical applications which have produced astonishing results in the fields of colonoscopy image analysis, specifically the detection of bowel cancer (notoriously tricky to get right) and in the processing of mammograms to enable early detection of breast cancer. In both these cases huge amounts of training data - mammogram images and endoscopy videos together with the known outcomes - have been used, after which these systems are significantly better than human consultants at early stage detection together with far fewer false positives- fewer mistakes overall. They never get tired, never have a heavy night on the town, never get sick.

It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), ask a dumb or badly phrased question, and you'll get a dumb answer.

It's very early days in the AI world - there's a long way to go yet.

Well, AI has struggled to provide a schematic for a wireless all day. It will not admit defeat, just keeps saying it will do it then producing a block diagram and apologising for failing.
Currently I am waiting again for a hand drawn schematic, perhaps another 3 hours for nothing. Will it admit defeat or wait until I am dead?

I don't doubt that these systems do work in very specific tasks but when they get to a more generalised nature I have found that results can very easily go haywire if your input is not in the norm of their acceptance criteria.

I don't know how much is due to actual AI and how much to advanced search (although AI could be expanded to include human aided AI) but I find that finding information these days can be a pain as search engines gear themselves to intelligent responses to queries in a general way but this fact makes it difficult for me to find information of a specific nature which I know exists but is not mainstream. As in the example here, the response appears to be generally simplistic rather than attempting to give what is really needed. I feel it often makes getting the result needed much harder than it would be without. There maybe needs to be different intelligence levels of AI for different academic levels?

My thoughts in general are to beware of the idea that these systems don't tire or go wrong too. Software is often still bug ridden and the more complex it is the greater the chance of a glitch. Don't forget that your Windows computer will generally slow down as time progresses, for example. The hardware can fail in strange ways too. An AI system is a complex system as is a human. The more complex it becomes the more un-predictable it will be. Dedicated AI is easier to predict but people will attempt to enslave all forms to their aims.

I was involved a bit in the early days of AI and do remember some amusing quirks when the AI responded to things it shouldn't have even tried to understand but was programmed for a broad range of input.

There were some rudimentary block diagrams of each valve produced, interestingly using two EF36 rather than one  because it added an RF front end.
But nothing with any components other than the valves, certainly no values or connections.
I got bored with checking the lack of progress. Every time I challenged AI it just made excuses and instigated another long wait for nothing.
After 4 days I abandoned the attempt.
