CLANSMAN 20 WATT RF AMPLIFIER
Can this amp be used on SSB within the range 30-70mhz. Not sure if this is FM Only!

I'd suspect FM or CW only.

There are three main Clansman families.
1 to 40 MHz (HF) Some are 2 MHz to 30 MHz. Most CW/AM/SSB
35 to 75 MHz (VHF, likely FM only). Some far more limited frequency. I'd have thought up to 85 MHz as I have a NATO aerial that used to be 85 MHz.
Air control, so AM only, but about 200 to 400 MHz (not Civilian airband?).

This stuff is quite old now. I had 200W Grinel (SA Racal) and transportable 20W syncal Racal (both military SSB / CW HF) that's a similar era to early Clansman. Noisy and prone to blowing finals. I think maybe 24V? I got rid of it all. Too inflexible. The FT101ZD Mk2 and Mk3 I had were far better. I also had a FT817ND with homebrew 80W HF amp and band filters automatically switched, A pair of 20W amps for 2m & 70cm. I gave the HF amp to an owner of a 5W SDR set when I got a cheap S/H FT857D (with the DSP factory built).

I did have some old Motorola rigs I was going to mod for 70 MHz, but they needed crystals and only 6 channels. I started off with an R1155 for receive and later got a 19 set but the military had ripped out the TX section tuning vanes.

Thanks Mike, it's a 20W variable 30-70mhz in several settings via a switch and runs on 24 volt.
Might be useful in the 40mhz or 60mhz range too!
I have converted loads of pmr to 4m, pye, maxon, key/kyodo, ascom etc.

I have also played around with Europas, reporters, boot mounts and A200's back in the day among others.

My 1st VHF set was a valved Pye boot mount with a motor or solenoid (i forget which) to change channel. I never got the crystals.

Mike, that would be the Ledex solenoid creating a rotary movement. I have some somewhere, thougn not Pye.
On Friday, a friend asked for a copy of the MF5U Europa service sheet, which I obliged.
I also recall an "expert" at a rally telling me he had seen an A200 that was UHF on 70cm.
He still didnt believe me when I stated I was a Pye area service engineer and that just, low, mid and high band were the only versions.

A bit like a 405 line TV I had in 1971. Cabled remote with solenoid (just a next button, but maybe the Pye was bidirectional?) and wired volume.

Perhaps someone confused 70 MHz (4m) with 70 cm (0.7m 430 MHz)? The A200 certainly had a version that could be used on 70 MHz.

A quick search of A200 suggests:
EO: 68-88MHz,
M1: 105-108 MHz,
BO: 132-156MHz, and
AO: 148-174 MHz.

I'd have bet it's Class C / FM only but a search tells me it's a linear amp, so can do AM (no doubt 1/4 power) or SSB. Yet doesn't do Air band. The AO would have suited Marine?

So EO model for 4m and BO (and maybe AO) for 2m.

I remember when the UK had land mobile on upper Band II, so I'm getting old. Actually I remember TV before there was 625 lines in the UK, though other countries had 625 lines before I was born.
