I concur with Terry.
Ideally get the 10.7mHz alignment correct first and use off air transmission for the front end unless its seriously wrong then you'd need to find out why. Often aerial tuning is better done off air than with a signal generator due to mismatches.

Thanks very much Terry for that info. When the chassis is removed there is a 1 to 10cm scale visible for carrying out the alignment procedure, there is an explanation of what it corresponds to in the service data.

Sorry what is off air transmission and can you explain in a little more detail about the harmonics and how I might get around the frequency of my signal generator not being high enough.

"Off air" As transmitted from normal radio stations. As against using a signal generator.

Off air can be confusing a bit like inflammable.

It feels like asking obvious questions but I was just clarifying the terminology meant. I am sure that once you put it all into practice it becomes obvious. It's all been very helpful though so thanks again.
