A 7360 valve will thrash an SA612! DDS has terrible spurious outputs and cannot be used because it requires connecting to a digital bus from a processor of some sort and such things don't exist in my world. The last PLL I designed only a couple of years ago was mainly discrete! A Wadley loop is still a fantastic system and I would use it still today. I consider the RA17 and RA117 the best radios ever built... (I just wish I could obtain one but it seems destined to never happen as no one will send them by courier and it's not possible for me to collect in person! Another of my bete noires along with my hatred of modern technology) and vastly superior to any DDS and SDR rubbish.
I designed and built my latest bit of workshop rear a few months back. A bench PSU for valve work, which I do a lot of as I specialise in high end hi fi gear. It is a hybrid and uses both very accurate voltage ref IC's, small signal mosfets and an ECC81 and 6550. Mainly on tag strip but also several veroboard modules. It works superbly. My technical perversion knows no end though as I also recently designed and built a SMPS to provide HT and LT to a vintage valved USA military grid dip meter with a missing transformer! Note I never claimed to be sane
HP182T mainframe here with HP8558B. A tracking generator for it has been on the round tuit list for a few years (the matching HP one, 8444A but has to be Opt-59 version, tends to go for more than the S/A and is not common) and I guess I'll pretty much have to use SMD for that.. but at least it won't be digital! There's a design for just this by Ian Hickman but I only have a very small schematic for it and can't get hold of the original article. It uses Mini-Circuits wideband amps which seem to be obsolete so no doubt a bit of a redesign will be required. Free running UHF oscillator!
I won't have anything like the Rigol because.... you guessed it! because it's digital yes! Had much similar friendly arguing with Mark Hennessy lately over digital scopes See, what I really want what I really really want is not, interestingly enough, zig a zig ah... but a Tektronix valve 'scope such as a 545B or similar! The single most impressive and desirable piece of electrical equipment in history to my extremely biased eyes. If only people were willing to courier them....
(FWIW I have designed all SMD equipment, and the PCB's and got solder stencils etc, for past employers. I just don't like it and will always use the big , hot, expensive, electricity guzzling, old fashioned method when I can)
