The military is fond of antenna's that can be used by people who have no knowledge or interest in proper operating procedures especially when they are under stress. The T2FD antenna is a dipole that is terminated with a resistor opposite the feedpoint and pretty broadband.
In the ARRL antenna compendium #7 is a discussion of the prismatic polygon vertical antenna that covers a 3:1 or 5:1 frequency range. Unfortunately normally vertical antennas pick up a lot of man made noise but I do not know how this antenna will perform. It uses a lot of wire and it is not particularly small otherwise I would try it out, too much investment for taking a punt and discovering it will not work in my environment.
Loops are a lot better, espcially if horizontal. But if a loop is vertical then you might be able to rotate it and tune out the worst.
