Regarding the forum I'd say that the moderation is a bit OTT, all they need to add is a disclaimer not a refusal on your posts.
I'd say that your mod is fine although I'd be inclined to use Viton O rings, they are impervious to oil and chemicals and stand up well in adverse conditions. I suspect you'd need a suitable sealer too, Blue Hylomar is a good one.
