I think it would have been darker Nick but its re-finishers preference to me now. Back then dark sombre colours, furniture and most things were. Odd really as the lighting was probably poor, maybe worse than those awful fluorescents of the first low energy bulbs. Thank goodness LEDs came along even though they put out interference, none in the radio Den though.
Even as late as 1938 radios were sold dark, and it was bad times as well. Here's a McMichael 808 before and after I refinished it. Now I think its too light, somewhere in between the old and new would be better if I was to do it again which I wont !
Maybe they liked everything dark as it didn't show the coal dust and nicotine from all the smoking. Weren't pipes awful, apologies to anyone still using one but the smell was often appealing.
