Most British controlled places that could have made train engines etc forced to import.
Curiously the USA mostly adopted the UK standard gauge. I don't know why Ireland has a wider gauge.

Whilst I knew there were originally two gauges, I didn't realise one of them was over 6 feet.
I K Brunel's GWR gauge at 7 feet and 1/4 inch.
