Used both tricks in my time. The PL802T gave a rather milky picture with less contrast than the valve. When the PL802 stocks came in the transistor replacement was swapped back. In fact the EF184 worked better even though it lit up like a bulb on high contrast or peak white, plus they actually lasted a couple of months.
